What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

PRP is plasma that’s combined with a high concentration of platelets -- and both are taken from your own blood. Health care practitioners have been using PRP for years because of its innate ability to kickstart your body’s natural healing capacities.

Whenever you’re injured, your body directs the platelets in your blood to the wound site to start the healing process. The platelets contain growth factors and other proteins that enable the growth of new, healthy tissue.

Your platelets are a key component of your natural healing processes. Doctors identified their ability to support regeneration in your body and began to look for ways to apply it. Today, they use PRP in a wide range of applications. Specifically, PRP is used for:

  • Treating joint pain
  • Trigger hair restoration
  • Rejuvenating skin

Can PRP work for me?

If you’re living with aching joints, thinning hair, or tired, wrinkled skin, PRP could be just what your body needs.

During your PRP treatment, Dr. Johnston takes a very small sample of your blood and places it into a centrifuge that separates the blood components. To make your PRP, she mixes the platelets with a small amount of plasma, which is the liquid portion of blood.

Then, she can apply that PRP wherever your body needs it so you can feel and look your best.

What should I expect from the different PRP treatments?

Each PRP treatment is slightly different.

PRP treatment for joint pain

If Dr. Johnston is using PRP to alleviate joint pain, she injects the platelet-rich plasma directly into the joint. This minimizes inflammation and stimulates the growth of new, healthy tissue.

PRP for hair restoration

During treatments for improved hair growth, Dr. Johnston injects the PRP at targeted locations across your scalp. This improves blood flow and kickstarts hair production in your hair follicles, including those that have stopped producing hair.

PRP for skin rejuvenation

Dr. Johnston leverages the power of PRP combined with the power of microneedling to transform your skin’s tone and texture. She uses microneedling to create tiny channels in the skin (through which the PRP can penetrate), then applies the PRP to jumpstart the production of new, healthy-looking skin.

Are you ready to use your body’s natural healing power to treat what ails you? For more information or to find out if PRP is right for you, call Donna Johnston, MD, or schedule your appointment online.
