Fillers Q & A

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are similar to Botox® in that they’re quick, easy injections designed to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. But Botox is designed to treat dynamic wrinkles, which are the wrinkles that appear over muscles that move regularly, like the ones at the corners of your eyes or between your eyebrows.

What about the wrinkles and sagging skin that develop elsewhere on your face? Are you stuck with hollow cheeks, thinning lips, and deep facial folds? Not anymore. Dr. Johnston uses dermal fillers to treat all of those issues and several more. Specifically, the dermal fillers she offers can:

  • Restore volume in your cheeks
  • Minimize nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Hide scars
  • Plump and hydrate your lips
  • Minimize the appearance of jowls

How do dermal fillers work?

These dermal fillers are injected to sit under the surface of your skin, restoring the volume your face has lost. Dr. Johnston injects the dermal fillers into targeted areas to help you reclaim your youthful appearance without leaving you looking fake or plastic.

At her warm, welcoming office, Dr. Johnston offers multiple types of dermal fillers, including:

  • Radiesse®
  • Restylane®
  • Belotero®

Radiesse is a dermal filler made from calcium hydroxylapatite, while both Restylane and Belotero are made from hyaluronic acid. All of these fillers are safe and deliver an immediate plumping effect that dissipates over time.

Which type of dermal filler is right for me?

The right dermal filler for you depends on your unique skin goals. If the longevity of the procedure is important, Radiesse might be your best fit because its calcium-based formula makes it last longer than most other dermal fillers. In fact, Radiesse often lasts a year or more, while most other fillers only last a few months.

If you want to minimize the risks of side effects, you might choose a hyaluronic acid filler. This substance is already found in your skin, so it’s extremely safe to use as a filler.

If you’re not sure which type is best for you, set up a consultation with Dr. Johnston. She offers her decades of dermatology experience to help you find the best option for your skin. For increasing column in the nasal labial fold and cheeks, Radiesse is the preferred filler. For enhancing lips, Restylane or Belotero is the right choice. For the delicate area under the eyes, Belotero is the most likely choice.

Regardless of which filler you choose, Dr. Johnston uses it to help you look and feel your best. Ready to get started? Call her office or book your appointment online today.
